The Department of Energy has been inviting companies to put a capital of about P2.73 billion for supporting the program, which plans to convert 500 buses to CNG in the Visayas region. This place is one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines, along with Mindanao and Luzon.
DOE director Jesus Tamang gave the details of project\'s cost, which will require 1.75 billion for the acquisition, retrofitting and re-powering of the CNG buses that have been planned for running on the streets.
He said that about P980 million will be assigned for the setting up of refueling facilities. There will be one mother and eight daughter stations located in strategic city places.
The Natural Gas Vehicle Program for Public Transport has been advocated by the DoE since 2003 and it took a new thrust under this new administration. It had started in Luzon, where 200 CNG buses have been fully deployed starting in 2009. Moreover, it is expected that the fleet would climb to more than 2,000 in 10 years.
