The entire fleet of Barcelona’s waste management will be powered by CNG

More than 200 vehicles of three concessionaires, which are responsible of collecting garbage at this Iberian city, will be propelled by methane. The fuel will be supplied by Gas Natural (distributor of the fluid). In addition to guaranteeing the supply of natural gas, the company will build refueling stations to satisfy the demand of the urban cleaning service. CEPSA, URBASER and CLD will be the firms in charge of the waste management from November 2009 and over the next eight years. In the future, those facilities are expected to provide CNG to other vehicles, such as taxis and commercial fleets. Experts from Gas Natural explained that the use of methane in this kind of units reduces more than 85% of oxides of nitrogen emissions, 100% of suspended particles emissions and 20% of dioxide carbon emissions.
