Pakistani province adds 2,000 CNG vehicles to its transport system
With the modern London\'s transport service as a role model, the province of Punjab plans to renew its own service by adding 2,000 CNG buses. With this project, $94 million dollars in fuel costs per year will be saved.
To achieve this, the Transport Department of the province will join the Chinese company Yunma Aircraft Manufacturing, with the purpose to provide Punjab population -which exceeds 80 million people- a more modern, safer and affordable service.
Some of the vehicles that will become operational from next year were already tested on the streets of Lahore, the provincial capital, and it is estimated that the first batch will have 50 units. This will start working in the first week of January.
By March 2010, 350 buses are expected to be in operation, plus 50 units that Yunma promised to donate to schools in the province. The remaining vehicles will be added between March and December of next year.
Besides, they plan to strengthen the infrastructure that will support this service, which includes 53 routes and 700 bus stops, is linked to the Pakistani Intelligent Transportation System. This also involves equipping vehicles with communication technologies that will connect them to a central control room.
