NGV Industry - who is who?
Asia is home to 6 out of the top-10 biggest NGV countries in the world 9 out of 15 biggest countries are also in Asia). In November, Iran with 1.64M NGVs has replaced Brazil as
the 3rd biggest NGV country, joining Pakistan and Argentina in the top-3 list. The Asian top-10 list consists of Pakistan, Iran, India, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, and Japan.
With its sound government assistant and mandate, and a strong support from the private sector, Iran could become no. 1 NGV nation with 1-1.5 years from now.
In the cars/LDVs sector, the big contenders in Asia by ranking include Pakistan, Iran, India, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Egypt, Armenia, Russia, (all have over 60,000 NG- LDVs). In the bus sector, mainly powered by CNG, the main users consist of Korea, Myanmar, India, Thailand, Armenia and Russia (all over 8,000 units) with China leading the fleet with 150,000 buses. In the MD-HD truck segment, Russia, China, Japan, Armenia and Thailand prosper well each has more than 17,000 units).
Plans and targets
Iran will add around 884 more stations soon. Taking a careful calculation, Thailand is now set to have 220,375 NGVs and 595 refuelling stations by 2012, a modest target considering that it has already 158,000 NGVs and 358 stations by early November 2009.
China plans to increase its natural gas refuelling stations from current 1,339 to 3,000 units by 2015, and aims to have 1 million NGVs by 2012 and 3 million by 2020. Focus for 2012 target is mainly to improve the number and the technology of dedicated NG, bifuel, dual fuel vehicles.
For 2020, dedicated CNG and LNG technologies and the adoption of electronic-control, turbochargerintercooler, lean-burner and maintenance will be the main focal points.
Korea which currently has 19,000 CNG buses and 277 CNG dispensing units (in 130 stations) aims to have 26,000 CNG buses and 440 CNG dispensing facilities by 2010.
