Gas Summit Latin America 2010
In the third and last day of the event held in Rio de Janeiro, a great discussion about the use of NGV in heavy vehicles as a substitute for diesel was realized. According to participants, the substitution reduces emissions of pollutant gases and is a viable alternative, technologic and economic.
For Rosalino Fernandes, chairman of the Latin American NGV Association - ALGNV in this scenario, the main alternative to diesel has been natural gas. “In Latin America as a whole, the panorama of NGV is positive. The use of natural gas in heavy vehicles has already been used for over twenty years, especially because of the benefits resulting from its use, such as reduction in 40% of the pollutant emissions caused by diesel. The noise also from the diesel engines can be reduced in 50%, as has been demonstrated in experiments in others countries and laboratory tests conducted in Brazil”, said the executive.
Fernandes also indicated as the main benefits of substitution: the increase in national energy security and reduction of noise and environmental risks.
The expansion in the use of NGV not just for light vehicles but also heavy vehicles is one of the premises of the project of the Secretary of State for Economic Development, Energy, Industry and Services of Rio de Janeiro – SEDEIS-RJ and the Department of Transport of Rio de Janeiro – SETRANS-RJ.
According to Jorge Loureiro, superintendent of gas from SEDEIS-RJ, the program for use of CNG in the bus fleet of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro has forecast of implantation to the 2014 World Cup.
Among the topics that were discussed at the last day of the event were: experiences in Latin America about the use of CNG in heavy vehicles; introduction of the diesel/gas conversion kit - in development by industry and its performance; the vision of the engine manufacturer on the new technology; and analysis of regulation of CNG in heavy vehicles in Brazil.
